The Conservancy uses prescribed fire management on Palmetto Bluff every year from January through early March. This land management technique provides countless wildlife and forestry benefits. It opens the forest floor and allows new growth. This new growth is fertilized by the ashes of its predecessors. Soft, fertilized new growth provides high quality food sources which revitalize the food chain. It creates diversity within plant communities which builds diversity in the fauna that rely upon it. Prescribed fire is, without a doubt, a crucial component in our management strategy.
We take pride in telling you that the Conservancy team has had a record-breaking year in our fiery endeavors. The new records are as follows:
– Most acres burned in one season – 1,825 (and counting)
– Most contiguous acres burned – 1,335 (and counting)
– Most acres burned in one day – 445 (we actually achieved this acreage in 5.5 hours)
2019 has proven to be a great year thus far. A successful burning season can greatly set the proverbial tone for the remainder of the year. We hope this momentum continues as we transition out of burning season and into a long-awaited spring.
