While most of the South Carolina coast goes quiet after Labor Day, Palmetto Bluff stays energized and active. The Farmers Market returns, FLOW Gallery welcomes new Artists in Residence, and the Palmetto Bluff Conservancy shifts into fall programming, from herp citizen science surveys to ghost stories at the Conservancy Classroom.
For residents and visitors, this season has a distinctive pulse. Here’s a month-by-month look at Fall in South Carolina at Palmetto Bluff.
Palmetto Bluff’s calendar is packed with events and happenings throughout the autumn season. Artist visits and gallery openings, farmers markets, conservation programs, and Club traditions fill the list of things to do at the Bluff from September through December.
New Orleans-based artist Annie Moran joins Palmetto Bluff as September’s Artist in Residence. Raised in rural Louisiana and shaped by the state’s natural landscapes, Moran spent 12 years as a fashion industry designer in New York before returning home to focus on watercolor painting, mural art, and textile design.
Walk through River Road Preserve with the Conservancy team as they point out native plants and wildlife, while answering questions along the way. Walk-ins welcome.
Held twice a year in partnership with the South Carolina Partners in Amphibian and Reptile Conservation, Herp Blitz surveys Palmetto Bluff’s amphibian and reptile population by checking turtle traps, hoop traps, and cover boards across the property. Participants can reserve a morning slot, an afternoon slot, or a full day. Families encouraged.
These events are only a sampling of what’s in store this season. The Conservancy runs a myriad of programs throughout the year, from bird walks to archaeology talks to hands-on wildlife surveys. For a full list of upcoming events, check the Conservancy’s regularly updated events calendar.
Gulf Coast oil painter Brandon Finnorn joins Palmetto Bluff as October’s Artist in Residence. Based in Madisonville, Louisiana, Finnorn grew up along Alabama’s waterways and earned a medical degree before turning to painting full time in 2017. He works from underwater photography and firsthand observation of coastal wildlife, and his paintings have appeared in We Are Fly Fishing, In The Loop, and Mobile Bay Magazine.
Now in its 22nd year, Bluffton Arts & Seafood Festival brings more than 100 artists from across the country to Old Town Bluffton, where they show and sell original work in oil, watercolor, photography, clay, and mixed media. These weeks also feature Lowcountry seafood from the area’s top kitchens, live music, and entertainment on stage.
Held at The Farm on select Wednesdays from 9 am to 1 pm, it brings together area growers, food producers, home bakers, and artisans.
Palmetto Bluff Conservancy staff share mysterious stories collected from Palmetto Bluff’s past and present. Open to walk-ins or by Zoom for those who can’t attend in person.
Now in its 29th year, the SCAD Savannah Film Festival is the largest university-run film festival in the world, drawing more than 60,000 guests to Savannah’s historic theaters for eight days of screenings, panels, and industry guests. Past honorees have included Kevin Costner, Amy Adams, and Jenna Ortega. The festival has become a recognized stop on the road to the Academy Awards.
All are invited to enjoy the fall season at Palmetto Bluff on November 4 for the Fall Farmers Market. This seasonal event is an expanded version of the regular Farmers Markets at The Farm, with a larger lineup of vendors than the standard Wednesday markets.
The Artists of the Bluff is a community of more than twenty professional painters, potters, photographers, and jewelers who live at Palmetto Bluff. Founded in 2018 by Members Karen Dale, Nancy Dwight, and Chappy Bailey, the group hosts two shows a year in spring and fall. A portion of every sale is donated to the Palmetto Bluff Conservancy.
A resident favorite, residents are invited to shop for the perfect tree under twinkling lights at this quaint holiday market.
The traditional start of the holiday season at Palmetto Bluff, the Lighting of the Village is held on Wilson Village Green, complete with carolers, hot cocoa, and a visit from Santa.
During these three months, the Bluff’s calendar reflects the same principle that has shaped the community from the start: create a place worth returning to, season after season.
Fall’s mix of art, conservation, food, and Club traditions offers residents and Members countless ways to experience the land and the surrounding community.
