Where to Eat Oysters This Season in the Lowcountry

Oyster Season in Palmetto Bluff: A Lowcountry Tradition

As the air cools, the light softens, and the landscape begins to shift, a familiar feeling returns to the Lowcountry: oyster season. From October through March, friends and neighbors gather around steaming trays of oysters, sharing stories and conversation over the steady rhythm of a shucking knife. At Palmetto Bluff, the tradition carries through Club dining rooms, village restaurants, backyards, and a season of gatherings that stretches well beyond the first frost.

A Tradition Rooted in the Lowcountry

Long before the first inhabitants settled on the banks of the May River, oysters were already doing quiet work along these waters, filtering the marsh and building the reefs that shelter coastal marine life, a small marvel worth its own story. The ancient delicacies remain a Lowcountry staple, now woven into dinner reservations, Saturday afternoons, and a calendar of gatherings that fill Club dining rooms and backyards alike from October through March. Residents who prefer to build their own fire and shuck a bushel at home can find everything they need to host the perfect oyster roast. For those who would rather leave the heavy lifting to someone else, here’s where Palmetto Bluff serves them, along with the oyster gatherings worth marking on the calendar this fall and winter.

Members’ Favorite Places to Enjoy Oysters at the Palmetto Bluff Club

The marina-inspired atmosphere of Canoe Club is the perfect place to enjoy locally sourced Lowcountry oysters. Set along the May River, with views of the inland waterway on the other side, its coastal kitchen draws on local seafood and ingredients. The menu takes a river-to-table approach, pairing shrimp, seafood, and produce from area farms with simple preparations that allow each ingredient, especially the oysters, to shine.

Cole’s offers a more social setting. Built as a family-friendly meeting place around local farmers, fishermen, and purveyors, it pairs seasonal seafood with curated wines and local brews. The screened porch overlooking the marsh is a natural spot for a few salty oysters before or after a Club activity.

May River Grill, tucked beside the May River Golf Course, rounds out the Club’s dining options with a more traditional, post-round setting. It’s a quietly cozy spot for lunch or dinner, with a casually elevated menu. Members can enjoy a bite inside by the fireplace or on the porch overlooking the May River Golf Course.

Community Dining Beyond the Club

Buffalos, a longtime favorite in Wilson Village, gives residents and guests who haven’t yet joined the Club a seat at the table. Part of the Montage Palmetto Bluff’s restaurant offerings, Buffalos’ sweeping views of the May River and a menu built around American classics, it’s the kind of spot where a fall happy hour turns into a night of watching boats cruise by under the stars.

Also located in Wilson Village, RT’s Market serves as the community’s neighborhood convenience store. Part general store, part gourmet market, residents stop by for fresh seafood, wine, and all the ingredients for hosting a gathering of their own.

For guests staying at Montage Palmetto Bluff, River House offers an elegant take on oyster season, pairing meat and seafood dishes with an extensive curated wine selection. River House’s polished service is an elevated counterpoint to the traditional outdoor oyster roast.

There are plenty of dining options to enjoy throughout the year, and Palmetto Bluff’s dining scene stretches well beyond oyster season.

Fall and Winter on the Social Calendar

Beyond Palmetto Bluff’s gates, oyster season in South Carolina reaches a lively peak each October in nearby Old Town Bluffton. Now in its 22nd year, the Bluffton Arts & Seafood Festival runs October 9 through 18, bringing together more than 100 artists from across the country alongside Lowcountry seafood, live music, and entertainment. Just a short drive from Palmetto Bluff, the festival has become a fixture on many residents’ fall calendars.

Closer to home, the Farmers Market returns for the season with local vendors, fresh produce, farm eggs, and an array of seasonal culinary offerings. A favorite among residents and visitors alike, the market offers an easy way to spend time outdoors while supporting local growers, makers, and producers.

For an evening centered squarely on the season, the Moreland Oyster Roasts bring guests to the banks of Cauley’s Creek at Moreland Landing. Beneath string lights and Spanish moss, an open-air pavilion framed by palms and pines sets the scene for fresh steamed oysters and a classic Lowcountry boil, with the community’s iconic five-story treehouse rising just beyond the water. Open to resort guests and the local community, the evenings run from 5:00 to 8:00 PM on select fall and winter dates, with 2026 gatherings planned for November 27, December 24, and December 30.

A Lowcountry Fall at Palmetto Bluff

For residents, oyster season signals the arrival of cooler months and cozy Fall evenings: dinner at Canoe Club, an afternoon at the Bluffton Arts & Seafood Festival, a Saturday at the Farmers Market, and days that invite friends and family to sit outside a little longer. The land settles into this season the same way it settles into every other, naturally graceful and full of life.
