A new season is taking shape at The Farm, where fall planting is underway and plans are progressing for expanded growing space in the months ahead.
Farm Manager Shane Rahn and his team began planting for the fall season in September, starting with 320 squash seeds across five different varieties. The team plans to plant a sixth variety later in the month. Throughout September, they will continue filling the fields and raised beds with cool-season favorites, including broccoli, broccolini, cauliflower, several varieties of cabbage and lettuce, collard greens, and Brussels sprouts.
Beyond the seasonal harvest, The Farm itself is growing. A new chicken house is nearing completion and will soon become home to the Bluff’s resident flock. Once the chickens have settled into their new space, the existing chicken run will be removed to make room for 13 new raised beds.
This expansion will bring The Farm’s total to 35 raised beds, creating additional space for future crops and continuing to build upon the agricultural program at Palmetto Bluff.
The changing season will also bring the return of Farmers Markets, giving Members and visitors the opportunity to enjoy fresh produce and other seasonal offerings from The Farm throughout the fall. Five markets are planned for the remainder of 2026, including two larger seasonal markets celebrating fall and the holidays. These festive gatherings will feature an expanded collection of local artisans and makers, along with additional experiences that bring the spirit of each season to life.
From newly planted rows to expanded garden beds, the months ahead promise plenty of growth at The Farm and fresh reasons to gather as the Lowcountry moves into fall!
