At the intersection of art and the natural world, Louisiana-based artist Brandon Finnorn finds inspiration in the quiet beauty of the waters that shape our coastal landscapes. Through bright oil paintings that capture the movement, color, and intricate details of aquatic life, Finnorn invites viewers to look beyond the surface and discover the extraordinary in the natural world.
As part of The Arts Initiative at Palmetto Bluff’s Artist in Residence program, Finnorn brings a distinct perspective to the Lowcountry, sharing his artistic practice and inviting guests to explore the relationship between observation, creativity, and environment.

Raised along the waterways of Alabama, Finnorn developed an early appreciation for the natural environments that continue to inform his work. Although his path initially led him to earn a medical degree, his longstanding passion for art ultimately took center stage in 2017, when he pivoted towards painting.
Today, based in Louisiana, Finnorn draws inspiration from the Gulf Coast’s diverse wildlife and marina environments. His work is deeply influenced by underwater photography and exploration, translating moments observed underneath the surface into richly layered oil paintings. Finnorn captures the stunning beauty of light filtering through the water, the shimmer of fish scales, and the movement of sediment that has come to define his marine-based compositions, and reveals a world that is often overlooked.

Palmetto Bluff’s Lowcountry waterways, wildlife and ever-changing natural light provides a fitting setting for an artist whose work is so rooted (grounded?) in the environment. The connection between art and nature is woven throughout the community, offering opportunities to engage with the landscape, not only as a place to explore, but as a place of inspiration.
Through The Arts Initiative, the Artist in Residence program welcomes accomplished artists and creators to share their talents, introduce new perspectives, and create meaningful opportunities for creative discovery. Finnorn’s residency reflected this spirit, encouraging guests to connect with the natural world through a different lens and discover the pull of artistic expression.
His work serves as a reminder that inspiration often lies just beneath the surface, much like the shimmering creatures that Finnorn so brilliantly paints.
