In addition to many exciting attractions, great dining options, and more, Bluffton has plenty to offer for a successful vacation. Bluffton’s Shell Art Trail is one of the town’s most fascinating attractions. The exhibit offers visitors an opportunity to see a variety of local art and to gain an understanding of the town’s history. The trail is constructed from repurposed giant oyster shells and extends across Bluffton’s historic district.
You will find a map and a list of questions related to the attraction on the back of your trail passbook. These questions are answered by reading the plaques on the shells. Along the way, you will find amazing shells and discover interesting facts about oysters in addition to discovering the beauty of the local artwork. Besides dolphin watching and fishing, Bluffton offers a host of other activities including flatwater kayaking and fishing for you to enjoy during your vacation.
Palmetto Bluff focuses on sustainability and drives conservation efforts in the area. The conservancy offers a glimpse into the tranquil yet diverse wildlife that abounds within your own backyard. Incorporated in 2003, the Conservancy protects natural habitats such as the lush maritime forests and marshes, as well as providing a natural sanctuary for an array of species. They offer various workshops for the community where they can learn about conservation efforts, the landscape, and wildlife.
As a visitor and resident, you’re offered the opportunity to take part in the various research lessons and excursions facilitated by wildlife experts. One of the most popular workshops is Feederwatch, where you can observe the bird feeders spread throughout the conservancy and learn interesting facts about different species and their feed preferences.
If you want to experience the natural lure of the Bluff on your own, you can take a stroll through the canopy of live oaks at River Road Preserve and get to know the landscape. As you explore the Lowcountry, your relationship with nature will provide a window into history and culture, making for a memorable getaway.
The May River makes for an excellent place for flatwater exploration. You may opt to paddleboard, kayak, or canoe to experience the May River on a smaller scale. In the Lowcountry, the waters are calm and flat, making it a favorable area for standup paddleboarding as well.
The best way to experience the May River and the water trails is by taking a Duffy boat ride. The tour takes you along the winding path of the inland water trail and offers picturesque views along the way. The captain of the boat has a wealth of knowledge and will give you an in-depth understanding of the local wildlife as well as give a general overview of the landscape.
If you enjoy fishing as a sport or simply as a way to unwind, you’ll find plenty of places to set up and cast a line. Fishermen of all skill levels will find fishing in these waters challenging, as the local fauna ranges from largemouth bass and bream to redfish and copia. Consequently, you may cast from the banks for a calm and relaxing fishing trip or try your hand at fly fishing. While you’re casting a line, you might enjoy a nice riverside picnic to really get in touch with your senses and take in the natural beauty that is the Bluff.
