Bladesmith Quintin Middleton of Middleton Made Knives joined us for the 2021 Artist in Residence series with his stay in the Artist Cottage September 13-17. In his two-day workshop, Quintin led guests through the basics of knife work: steel, temperature, tools, and shape. He then demonstrated the knife creation process, from flattening the steel to stock removal and forging, with detailed explanations of every phase. Focusing on knife handles and other details, part two of this course continued the work Middleton began in the first workshop, walking guests through the creation of the handle, explaining the benefits and drawbacks of numerous design styles. Finally, Middleton demonstrated how to shape the handle and grind the bevels to make the blade of the knife sharp.
