A Complete Guide to South Carolina Winter at Palmetto Bluff

South Carolina’s winter is unlike any other on the East Coast. While many travelers search for “South Carolina winter” expecting cooler temperatures and limited outdoor options, the Lowcountry reveals something surprising: mild, sun-filled days that invite you outside, uncrowded amenities, year-round access to nature, and a peaceful atmosphere that’s ideal for both visitors and future residents evaluating four-season living.

At Palmetto Bluff, winter is not an off-season. It’s one of the most rewarding–and practical–times to experience the full breadth of the area. This guide breaks down exactly how to spend a winter day in the Lowcountry, including what the weather is actually like, which activities are at their seasonal best, and how to enjoy the day from sunrise to sunset.

What South Carolina Winter is Really Like

A typical South Carolina winter at Palmetto Bluff includes:

    • Daily temperatures in the mid-50s to mid-60s
    • Crisp but comfortable mornings
    • Low humidity and abundant sunshine
    • Calm water conditions are ideal for paddling or fishing
    • Minimal crowding on trails and golf courses

Morning: Calm, Scenic, and Outdoorsy

This is the ideal time for:

    • Migratory birdwatching
    • Peaceful morning walk or bike ride under century-old oaks
    • Photography with soft, pastel skies

Because the winter skies are clearer, the views tend to be far more dramatic than in the summer months.

Breakfast in Wilson Village

Start your day with a fresh-brewed coffee and house-made pastries from Buzz in Wilson Village, a popular Montage Palmetto Bluff café open from 7:00 AM to 2:00 PM.

All dining, retail, and village services in Palmetto Bluff and the surrounding areas remain open throughout the winter, benefiting both visitors and prospective homeowners evaluating a year-round lifestyle.

Walk or Bike the 32+ Miles of Trails

Winter is arguably the best season for exploring Palmetto Bluff’s trail system. The cool temperatures and low humidity make longer distances enjoyable, and visibility through the forested areas is clearer this time of year.

Expect to see more wildlife, especially a wider array of birds, as migratory patterns shift and fewer visitors arrive. River Road Preserve is particularly active in winter with deer, turkeys, and a variety of migratory bird species.

Winter-Friendly Activities

While winter isn’t swimming season, it is prime for:

Kayaking and Paddleboarding

Cold air and calm waters make paddling exceptionally peaceful. Since winter also brings more migratory birds and seasonal wildlife to the marshes, there are many good spotting opportunities. Additionally, weather-dependent guided paddling and kayak excursions are offered year-round.

Inshore Fishing

Winter is one of the strongest fishing seasons in the Lowcountry–redfish, speckled trout, flounder, and sheepshead are active and plentiful in cooler water.

Midday: Warm Sunlight & May River Fairways

Play a Round of Golf at May River

If you’re a member of the Palmetto Bluff Club or a guest of the Montage Hotel, you have the opportunity to golf at the beloved May River Golf Course. And with mild temperatures and low humidity, midday tee times are incredible this time of year.

Before you go:

    • Book a tee time in advance: May River Golf Course up to 30 days in advance, and the Crossroads 9-hole course up to 15 days in advance.
    • Prepare for winter conditions: The course is open year-round, but the grass may not be as green as in warmer months. The course is still in good condition for play.
    • Plan for your warm-up: Allow extra time and consider adding extra stretches.

May River is not open to the public; it’s only open to Club Members and Montage guests. If you are a Member or a guest, a caddie is required for both courses, and green fees for the May River Course are $270 + caddie gratuity.
