about Michael Smalls and Dino Badger

Michael Smalls is a 7th-generation basket-sewer from Mt. Pleasant, SC. He learned the craft from his grandmother, Lucinda Pringle – whose mother was an enslaved worker on Laurel Hill Plantation. Dino Badger, former apprentice and now partner of Michael, has roots that can be traced back to Round O, SC. The pair often pray for the well-being of the basket’s future owner as they sew.

Sweetgrass Basket Sewing

The Conservancy Classroom at Palmetto Bluff | $80 (plus tax + processing fees)

Join us in Moreland Village for our Artist in Residence Summer Sweetgrass Series kickoff! We are collaborating with the Palmetto Bluff Conservancy to welcome sweetgrass artisans Michael Smalls and Dino Badger for a special sweetgrass basket sewing workshop. Michael (a 7th-generation basket-sewer) and his former apprentice-turned-partner Dino will share insights into the rich history of the Gullah Geechee culture as they work with sweetgrass and instruct participants in the historical and spiritual art of sweetgrass basket-sewing, culminating in the completion of individual baskets.

Michael and Dino’s incredible work will be on display and available for purchase in FLOW Gallery + Workshop during July. Be sure to visit to see their culturally significant works, and bring one home to your art collection!
