Last month, The Arts Initiative at Palmetto Bluff hosted a captivating workshop led by Smithsonian artist and August Artist in Residence Jery Taylor, focusing on the traditional art of sweetgrass sewing. Taylor, whose craftsmanship has been featured on HGTV, the Discovery Channel, as well as in the Smithsonian’s permanent collection, has been dedicated to preserving the Gullah-Geechee cultural heritage since she began learning the art from her grandmother at the age of five at Boone Hall Plantation. The Sweetgrass Wall-Hanging Workshop offered participants a unique opportunity to engage with this intricate tradition and gain insight into Taylor’s expertise and commitment to her craft.
