The art of the Carolina Lowcountry has evolved as a distillate of the history and geography which make this region unique in the world. It ranges in style from the primitive folk art of the Sea Islands to the exquisite and sophisticated “naïve” paintings of Jonathan Green — from the Charleston etchings of Hutty and Verner to the stunning landscapes of Ray Ellis and West Fraser. The quality of light in the Lowcountry in all seasons has been compared to that of Provence, and this may help to explain why the region has been a magnet to artists the world over for many years. But the most compelling draw is the stunning natural beauty of the rivers, marshes and maritime forest, as well as the hope, optimism and warm good nature of the people which characterize this rare and mystical place.

The Palmetto Bluff Arts Commission was created in 2006 to help residents and guests embrace and enjoy a lifelong love of the arts.  Through an assortment of artistic events, teaching and talent, the Arts Commission of Palmetto Bluff serves as a launch pad for defining and showcasing visual, fine and performing arts.

Visual Arts and Artists
“Patron Parties” are the Commission’s unique way of showcasing artists in the intimate setting of a neighbor’s home. This relaxed setting allows for open and engaging interaction with the artist and experiential understanding of the art.

Music and Performing Arts
Blues, Jazz, Bluegrass to name a few. The Lowcountry is home to a diverse and extraordinary cast of musicians and performers. The Arts Commission brings these varied sounds and talents into our community in both small and large venues.

Sculpture
To round–out a diverse and sophisticated arts palette, the Palmetto Bluff Arts Commission is building a unique “private” sculpture collection for owners and guests. Housed amidst the varied natural settings within the community, outdoor sculpture enhances, magnifies, and showcases our natural world. The journey and process of bringing the sculptures into the community is as vital as the piece itself, with selection and installation important milestones of the “collection.”

Art as it relates to learning
To truly experience art, one must actively participate in it. The Arts Commission brings opportunities to meet artists and learn from them in a variety of venues. Look for workshops, lectures and classes, outings, camps, field trips, one–on–one instruction, and regional artistic offerings. The Lowcountry is home to a plethora of artistic talent and disciplines. The Commission will help residents connect to the dynamic individuals in the surrounding community. It will be a venue through which property owners are exposed to the Lowcountry and to artistic experiences throughout the region, not just within Palmetto Bluff.
