Beaufort is celebrating its 300th birthday in 2011 and its Antebellum homes and quaint downtown district preserve its long history. Beaufort has been fought over by the Scots, the French, the English, the Yemassee Indians and, finally, the North during the American Civil War. The Union Army occupied the city and ultimately helped save the beautiful old homes in the charming neighborhood known as “The Point.” Surrounded by fine restaurants and boutiques, Beaufort is the perfect destination for a horse-drawn carriage ride and genteel people watching.
